There are some stories that don’t follow the timeline we imagined for them.
When Mama first reached out, we had plans for a beautiful maternity session. We talked about documenting this sweet season of waiting, the anticipation, the excitement, the final days before meeting the tiny person who had already captured their hearts.
But this little guy had plans of his own.
Instead of photographing a glowing Mama with her growing belly, their family found themselves navigating NICU monitors, long days, uncertain moments, and learning that sometimes the beginning of motherhood and fatherhood looks different than what we envision.
After he was finally home and out of the NICU, we rescheduled. And what a gift that session became.
He may have technically been an “older newborn,” but goodness, he was absolutely perfect.

His tiny fingers wrapped together across his chest, his impossibly long lashes resting against rosy cheeks, and those little toes that parents spend hours admiring… every detail reminded us just how worth the wait he was.
One of my favourite things about newborn photography is that there isn’t a one-size-fits-all timeline. Parents often worry they’ve “missed their chance” if life doesn’t go according to plan. NICU stays, unexpected deliveries, recovery, and simply surviving those first weeks can shift everything.
But babies don’t stop being worthy of documenting just because the calendar says they’re a little older. Sometimes those sessions carry even more meaning.
This little boy’s story also gave us the opportunity to honour another important part of his family’s journey. Both of his parents served in the military, and incorporating that piece of their story into his session felt incredibly special. The patriotic setup wasn’t just a photograph; it was a tribute to two parents who have dedicated themselves to serving others and now share their greatest calling yet, raising this precious little boy.
As a Navy veteran myself, those images hold an extra layer of significance. There is a unique understanding that comes with military life: the sacrifices, the resilience, and the deep love of family that carries you through every season. Seeing that legacy represented in these photographs was truly an honour.

This sweet boy may have rewritten the plans we originally had, but in doing so, he reminded us of something important:
The most beautiful stories aren’t always the ones that unfold exactly as expected. Sometimes they arrive early. Sometimes they spend their first days fighting hard before coming home.
And sometimes, the detours end up creating photographs that tell an even richer story.
To this wonderful family, thank you for trusting me with these memories. Your little man is already so deeply loved, incredibly strong, and surrounded by parents who would move mountains for him.
Welcome home, sweet boy. The world has been waiting for you.
