There’s something truly magical about the moment a child becomes a big brother or sister. It’s a transition filled with curiosity, pride, tenderness, and sometimes a little awe. As a newborn photographer, sibling sessions are some of my absolute favorites to capture. There’s a softness to them that can’t be recreated. The gentle way little hands rest on a newborn’s back. The careful glances. The proud smiles. The unspoken promise of love and protection that begins the very first time they meet.
Every sibling interaction tells its own story.
Some children are instantly smitten, never wanting to put their new baby down. Others take a more observant role, sitting close and soaking it all in. Both are beautiful. Both are real. And both deserve to be remembered.
During sibling sessions, I always move at the child’s pace. There’s no pressure, no forcing smiles, and no expectations beyond simply being themselves. Whether it’s a quiet cuddle, a soft kiss on the forehead, or a moment of curiosity, those natural interactions are what create the most meaningful images.
One of the most special parts of these sessions is watching confidence grow. At first, many older siblings are unsure, holding their baby brother or sister carefully, sometimes with wide eyes. But within moments, you can see pride take over. That connection builds quickly, and capturing it in those early days becomes something families treasure forever.
As parents, we know how quickly time moves. Babies grow. Toddlers become big kids. And before you know it, these moments feel like a distant memory. That’s why photographing siblings with their newborn brother or sister is so incredibly meaningful and freezes a chapter you’ll want to remember forever.
