Planning your family’s Christmas photo session is exciting, but let’s be honest, choosing outfits for everyone can feel overwhelming. The right clothing makes such a difference in creating photos that feel both timeless and true to your family’s style. To make it easier, I’ve put together four beautiful outfit options, from classic and casual to neutral and elegant, that are coordinated without being overly “matchy-matchy.” Each palette brings a different mood,

I’ve put together four different looks that give you a starting point depending on your family’s style. Each one is coordinated, festive, and perfect for timeless holiday photos. As a photographer and Mom, I know that one of the most stressful parts of getting annual photos taken is getting the outfits picked out. I have the same amount of stress and I talk about styling outfits all the time. When it comes to my own fam, it gets hard!

So, to take one more thing off y’alls plate, I put together this guide. These are classic and casual, but will look good in any setting.

Classic Casual Christmas

Think red, black, and cream with touches of gold. This look mixes skirts, dresses, and dark wash jeans so everyone feels comfortable but still polished. A black skirt paired with a red top for mum, a cream sweater with dark denim for dad, and coordinating red and black pieces for the children create a cohesive style that pops beautifully against both indoor and outdoor holiday backdrops. The gold jewellery adds that subtle sparkle without taking away from the warm, classic tones.

Festive Semi-Fancy Christmas

For a slightly dressier take, emerald green and tan create a gorgeous and elegant combination. A green dress for mum with neutral shoes, a tan button-down for dad, and coordinating green and tan outfits for the children tie the whole look together. This palette is rich, classy, and perfect if you’d like your family session to have a more formal, festive feel without going all the way into black-tie territory.

Neutral Christmas

If you’re drawn to softer, more timeless photos, neutrals are the way to go. Whites, creams, tans, and touches of gold give a classic, dreamy look without feeling too busy. Think cosy cream sweaters, tan trousers, and a flowy skirt for mum paired with neutral shoes and delicate gold jewellery. This palette works beautifully in farmhouse-style studios, on neutral backdrops, and even outdoors when paired with natural greenery. It’s understated but stunning.

Relaxed Matching Christmas

Buffalo plaid is always a holiday favourite! The trick here is not to make everyone identical, but to pull in elements of plaid with small variations. For example, mum might wear a buffalo plaid shirt with black knee-high boots, dad can wear plaid mixed with solid trousers, and the children can wear coordinating plaid tops or accessories. It’s a fun, casual style that feels festive while keeping everyone comfortable.

At the end of the day, the best outfit choice is the one that makes your family feel comfortable, confident, and connected. Whether you’re drawn to festive plaid, warm neutrals, or rich emerald tones, these looks will ensure your photos feel cohesive and beautiful for years to come. Remember—it’s less about perfection and more about capturing the love and joy you share.
